Updated: Jan 19, 2024

Hey Fam! Are you looking to identify your wine palate? Do you know which wines you like? Don’t worry, you've come to the right place and I thank you for joining me! I am super excited about today as it is our first Wine Down Wednesday. I wanted to create this platform as a way to wind down, it's the middle of the week, we've been through a lot, and we still have two more days left of the work week. Grab you a cup of wine, liquor, tea, or maybe coffee and let’s chill! Let's have fun discussions here with Wine Down Wednesday. What better way to introduce Wine Down Wednesday with a discussion about wine.

Many may not be familiar with wine and think it's for bougie people. I am here to tell you it's not. At least in Europe, wine is like water, everyone drinks it! I did not like wine at first and that's because I did not know my wine palate. I'm super excited to hopefully get you excited about wine and introduce you to some new and exciting wines. Wine is intended for us to enjoy with friends and family, so let's enjoy! I want to start Wine Down Wednesdays with a toast. We can toast to Wine Down Wednesdays! Today I'm drinking a Cabernet Sauvignon, if you saw my Instagram live you know that I am doing a wine advent purchased in December from In Good Taste Wines. Unfortunately, it did not get to my doorstep until December 18th so my cousin gave me the idea to utilize the advent as a countdown to Black History Month. Join me everyday at least for the next 20 days as we countdown to Black History Month.

The palate identity method I am using was created by a young man named Dale Thomas Vonn. Let’s take a look at the two questions. How do you take your coffee and tea? I myself am a Frappuccino and a mocha latte girl, but I prefer a mint tea over green tea, I would probably be more like a 50 than a 40. Wine 101 Part II we will discuss basic wine terminology and answer commonly asked questions. If you have any questions feel free to comment below. Second question; which flavor do you prefer? I am a mango citrus girl but I also like red berry, I will go with the scores of 30 and 60. Tally up your scores from both questions. Because I am between two flavor palate scores, I have a score of 80 and 110.

If you had a total palate score of 1 to 40 you like sweet and/or floral wines. Some wines that you will enjoy are Sweet Riesling and White Zinfandel. Your body and mouthfeel is soft and light. If you have a pallet score between 41 and 80, my friend, you like citrus, floral, and bubbling wines. I am right at 80 and I like Rieslings and Pinot Grigio. And I do like light red to medium whites and a lot of sparkly stuff! If your palate score is between 81 and 120 you like full body wines and medium reds. Some of the wines that you will enjoy are Sauvignon Blancs, Pinot Noir and you like a dry Riesling. Because my palate score is also 110, I fit within the minerality berries on the nose, I'm going to see if I find a dry Riesling. If you have a palate score of 121 to 160 you like anything that has body. You will enjoy Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc. If you had a palace score of 161 to 200 you like hints of fruit and lots of earthiness. You like robust and jammy mouthfeel, I like that word jammy. You will enjoy a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and an aged Chardonnay. Again these are suggestions, to help identify wines you would like and the type of body and mouth.

The idea is for you to be able to take this information and feel a bit more educated and empowered. Your homework, now that you've identified your palate profile, is to head to a wine bar, your favorite bar you like to hang out, or your local liquor store and tell them what your palate ID is. For example, I might say to the bartender or to the person in the liquor store, do you have a citrus, floral, or bubbly wine that is light red to medium white or even sparkling and is not bone-dry. Try the suggested wine, and if that's not your favorite one try one of the other listed wines. Again it's all about having fun! Comment below once you have gone to the store and let me know which wines you decided to purchase.

I hope to see you all next week, it has been a ball and until then, have fun and take this information and share it with someone. Let them know about the sweet life over here at Texas Brown Sugar!
